Task


In pairs, you will be creating this box of your great grandparent's, then creating a second box of your own (from your perspective as a child living in the early 1900s), which your great grandchildren might find in 100 years.  You will also individually be completing a reflective writing piece at the end of the assignment.


Contents in Box 1:
  • One letter (click here for help writing a letter) – either from or to your great grandparent, describing some aspect of colonial life, focusing on a significant event from the time.
  • One diary entry (click here for help writing a diary entry)  - discussing daily life in the colonies.  Examples could include meals, leisure and/or work activities, people encountered (including Aboriginals), etc.
  • One sentimental object - could be anything relevant or useful from the time.  Examples might include toys, books, tools, clothing, photographs, etc.  This must be accompanied by a short written piece on why you have included this item.
  • One map - design and draw a map that represents Australia.  Using your research, draw in the colonies that were present in the 1800's.  Be creative in how you want to design your work.

Contents in Box 2:
  • One letter – this must be written to whoever comes across the box in the future, explaining why you have made the box, and discussing some key features of your post-Federation life, including a significant event.
  • One diary entry - this should discuss your reaction to your great grandparent's box, noting some of the key differences and similarities between your lives.
  • One sentimental object - similar to the one that your great grandparent include, this could be anything that held importance to you at the time.
  • One map - design and draw a map focusing on your local area.  Note any shops that may be in your town, as well as any other important buildings or landmarks (e.g. town hall, post office, Aboriginal settlements or missions, etc.).
  • One artwork or drawing - this could be of the landscape in the 1900's.  You can use concrete materials (plants, art supplies, etc.) to make your artwork more realistic and creative.

Note: In your letters and diary entries, you must include dates and locations, as well as descriptive, emotive and subjective language to convey your ideas.  The things you write about must be based on the research you have found, and use time-appropriate terminology if possible.
