AIM

This webquest aims to provide Stage 3 students the opportunity to learn about both colonisation and Federation, and the lives of people living in Australia at these times.  Students are given two tasks which are open ended enough to allow freedom in creative expression, whilst maintaining a commonality which allows the tasks to be assessed.  Working in pairs, students are required to use their research and knowledge from previous lessons to design and make two boxes from two different time periods.  The KLAs included in this project are HSIE, English and Creative Arts. Students not only need to use their prior knowledge, but also their researching skills, team work skills and their creative skills to achieve a positive result.

In completing this webquest, students will be able to identify how Australia has changed over 200 years.  Students will be required to explain certain significant events, and describe the daily lives of people who lived both in the early 1800s and early 1900s.

DIFFERENTIATION

This task can easily be differentiated for students with differing needs.  As the students are working in pairs, they are able to assist each other when they need to, which provides an opportunity for them to develop relationships, and the ability to work with others.  This task utilises student directed and inquiry based learning.  Thus, the students are able to work at their own pace, meaning that children who require more time will be able to access that, and children who work faster will also be able to do so.  Gifted or speedy students may be set additional tasks, such as including extra diary entries in their boxes (with specific topics to focus on so as to require more research and in depth reading), or including additional items in their boxes (of either their choice or the teacher's choice).  They could potentially be asked to design a profile of the Governor or Prime Minister (not applicable for the first box) of the time, and even provide an analysis of this person's attributes and successes in their career.

TIPS

This task could take as long or as short a time as the class teacher wishes.  It could be added to to take up an entire term, and the whole unit of work, or it could be modified or shortened to simply span a week or two.  Students should be given time in class to complete the project, and be required to do little to no work at home.  We would recommend spending several lessons prior to assigning this task introducing the topic of colonisation and Federation, and discussing what the differences in lifestyles might have been.  Special care should be taken to ensure that students include information about interactions with the Aboriginal inhabitants of the land at these times, and the policies that were in place which would have affected these interactions.

RESOURCES

The websites chosen and provided for the students will support and guide them in their research.  These websites are clearly set out on the resource page, as a starting point for students' research.  The websites provided link to both HSIE and English outcomes.

The resources on the resource page are available for students to access.  This however, does not mean that teachers cannot retain their information from there.  In the reference page, the resources under 'Teacher Resources' are not available on the resource page.  The resources under the 'Student Resources' are put there to reference the sources that students could use.
